Not only do we feel the effects of the warmer weather, but so do our four-legged friends. Keeping your dog cool in hot weather is all about forward planning to keep your dog healthy and happy, reducing the risk of your dog suffering from heatstroke. Here are some of our top tips to keep your dog cool and having fun in the sun.
Make sure your dog has access to plenty of clean, fresh water at all times. As dogs have very few sweat glands, they pant to help cool themselves, which can leave them dehydrated and in need of water.
Hot pavements can be painful for dogs, and if too hot, can burn their feet. Aim to take your dog a walk either early morning or the evening when it will be cooler and more pleasant, avoiding the warm midday sun.
Spending more time in the garden? Make sure you have a shady spot for your dog to lounge in. When indoors, try to keep a breeze going by opening windows or turning on a fan to keep them cool and comfortable.
Leaving a dog alone in a hot car can be a fatal move - even when parked in the shade with the windows open. If out in the car keep the windows open to allow a breeze when driving and have a plan so your dog isn’t left alone in the car.
If your dog is a fan of the water, going for a swim or playing with your garden hose can be a great way to keep your dog cool and have some fun. A wet dog is a cool dog

Walks in the summer sun sound like the perfect day out, however the harsh sun can make those hot paths painful on a dog’s sensitive paw pads. With paws taking a bit more of a pounding this tie of year it is important to help them maintain happy feet by checking their paws and claws often. Give them a good clean or wipe every so often to remove any dirt and check for injuries, paying special attention to any cracked areas on the paws. Use a moisturising paw balm to protect, heal, and moisturise the paws - also great for use on the nose!
Ear care for dogs is important all year round, particularly in the summer! Humidity and heat can make your dog’s ear the perfect condition for yeast and bacteria to grow, and if your dog loves to go for a swim, they could be even more prone to an ear infection. Always check your dog’s ears after being outside for any pesky fleas or ticks, and make a point to regularly clean out their ears to remove any risk of infection.
